II Semana do Cérebro

Entre os dias 14 e 19 de março de 2011, ocorrerá a II SEMANA DO CÉREBRO. Trata-se de uma iniciativa internacional, promovida no Rio de Janeiro por “Ciências e Cognição – Núcleo de Divulgação Científica e Ensino de Neurociências” (CeC-NuDCEN, IBCCF/UFRJ), através de uma iniciativa multi-institucional que conta com a parceria da Universidade do Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), Universidade Federal Fluminense (UFF) e Organização Ciências e Cognição (OCC). O evento está inscrito no calendário internacional da Brain Awareness Week, contando com o apoio institucional da Dana Foundation e da Society for Neuroscience (SfN).

ANNUAL MEETING OF THE SOCIETY FOR PSYCHOPHYSIOLOGICAL RESEARCH (SPR)

GRANTS TO ATTEND THE ANNUAL MEETING OF THE SOCIETY FOR PSYCHOPHYSIOLOGICAL RESEARCH (SPR)

Boston, Massachusetts (USA), September 14 – 18, 2011

DEADLINE FOR GRANT APPLICATION: APRIL 1st

AIM OF THE GRANTS:

The aim of the SPR travel grant program is to encourage psychophysiologists from developing countries in Latin America, Asia, and Eastern Europe to become members of the SPR and to participate actively in the annual meetings. The purpose of these awards is to permit the attendance at the SPR meeting of promising psychophysiologists who do not have funding resources in their own countries (e.g., because the scientific infra-structure of support is limited or absent), and to help bring into the larger community of scientists psychophysiological researchers from countries or regions where colleagues are sparse. The awards include a travel grant up to $1,500, free registration fee for the 2011 conference, and free SPR membership for 2011.  A large number of grants are available, but applications are evaluated competitively based on merit, geographical distribution and other factors.

CONDITIONS OF APPLICATION:

(a) Applicants must submit an abstract for a poster, symposium, or panel discussion. Instructions and online submission information are available at the SPR web site: www.sprweb.org.

(b) The abstract must report research within the domain of human psychophysiology using physiological measures of central (e.g., EEG, MEG, ERP, fMRI etc.) or peripheral nervous system functions (e.g., somatic reflexes, autonomic activity, endocrine, immune functions etc.).

(c) Applicants at research centers or universities located in Latin America, Asia (except Singapore, Hong Kong, Korea and Japan) or Eastern Europe are eligible. If sufficient funds are available, scholars from these areas who are temporarily working in economically advantaged countries will be considered.

(d) Applicants must either be a member of the SPR or have applied for membership.

(e) The grantees of last year are eligible to apply again although candidates who have not yet received an award have higher priority.

APPLICATION PROCEDURE:

Candidates should send their grant application before APRIL 1st, 2011, via e-mail to spr2011@gi.hum.titech.ac.jp (Asia & Eastern Europe) or vilajaime@yahoo.es (Latin America).  The following materials should be attached:

(a) A summary in English of their curriculum vitae which should include: publications and congresses/symposia/workshops/courses attended abroad indicating presentation type (oral or poster), year of degree, year and grants received, and current position (student or non-student, and university or institute name including that of studying abroad).

(b) A copy of the abstract that will be submitted for the 51st annual meeting via the SPR web site: www.sprweb.org.  Note that the final decision regarding each candidate depends on abstract acceptance by program committee.

(c) A copy of membership application if not currently a member. (Although no payment is required, please indicate that you are applying for the SPR travel grant in the “Method of Payment” section of the SPR membership application form. If a non awarded candidate wishes to attend the meeting his/her application will be considered upon payment of fees.

University of Basel: Postdoc/Researcher Position in Cognitive & Economic Psychology

The Center for Economic Psychology at the Department of Psychology of the University of Basel, Switzerland, is seeking applicants for a postdoctoral position for a period of 2 years with the possibility to extend the position for further years. The ideal candidate would have a Ph.D. in psychology, cognitive science, computer science, neuroscience, or a related field, solid knowledge of cognitive psychology and research methods, and an interest in applying these skills to understand the cognitive processes underlying human decision making. Experience with mathematical modeling and/or imaging techniques (fMRI) is desirable. Applicants will be part of an international research group in an English-speaking environment. The required teaching may be conducted in German or English. The salary will be very competitive. Additional resources for funding experiments and conference travel are available.

The position can begin as soon as possible, but a later start date is negotiable. SBNeC Oferece Auxílio para Participação de Estudante Brasileiro no 10e Colloque de la Société des Neurosciences

A Sociedade Brasileira de Neurociências e Comportamento, reafirmando sua parceria com a Société Française des Neurosciences, irá oferecer um auxílio de 1600 euros para um(a) doutorando(a), sócio(a) em dia da SBNeC, participar do 10e Colloque de la Société des Neurosciences, a ser realizado em Marseille, de 24 a 27 de maio de 2011. Esta iniciativa, que também possibilitará a realização de visitas a laboratórios de neurociência na França, tem o propósito de auxiliar um estudante brasileiro a se engajar em um projeto de pós-doutoramento a ser realizado junto a um grupo de pesquisa francês.

Os candidatos devem ser estudantes de pós-graduação em seu último ano de doutoramento, brasileiros, sócios da SBNeC em dia com a anuidade de 2011, cujo projeto de doutorado possua temática em neurociências e esteja sendo realizado em um programa de pós-graduação vinculado a instituição brasileira.

As inscrições deverão ser realizadas, até 31 de janeiro de 2011, por intermédio da secretaria da Société Française des Neurosciences.

8th IBRO World Congress in Florence, Italy

Celebrating its 50th anniversary next year, the International Brain Research Organization (IBRO) – along with the Italian Society of Neuroscience (SINS) – invites the world’s neuroscientists to Florence, Italy, for the 8th IBRO World Congress, taking place July 14-18, 2011.

Hosted once every four years in collaboration with an IBRO member society, the IBRO World Congress of Neuroscience is a seminal, worldwide event reflecting IBRO’s core mission of promoting international collaboration and exchange of scientific information. For the meeting in Florence, the organizers expect approximately 5000 participants from around the world.

IBRO will offer Travel Fellowships of up to Euros 1,250 each to attend the IBRO World Congress.

Falecimento de Héctor Maldonado

Héctor Maldonado contextualiza o alcance do trabalho desenvolvido por seu grupo.

Com a mais profunda tristeza comunico à SBNeC, e demais sociedades científicas brasileiras e latinoamericanas, o falecimento do querido amigo e colega argentino, Héctor Maldonado, professor da Universidade de Buenos Aires, no dia 25 de dezembro último. Cientista de grande reconhecimento por seu trabalho na área de percepção visual e de memória, Maldonado teve uma presença forte nas tentativas de união da ciência latinoamericana, nos anos 1970. Com Elisaldo Carlini e Hector Maldonado, compusemos a primeira diretoria da Sociedade Latinoamericana de Psicobiologia em 1972, fundada em memorável encontro na então Escola Paulista de Medicina. Esta sociedade, que viria a originar a Sociedade Brasileira de Psicobiologia, depois designada Sociedade Brasileira de Neurociências e Comportamento, teve pouca duração devido à instabilidade política dos países da região. Três décadas mais tarde, o ressurgimento de uma integração científica latinoamericana, cujo marco mais expressivo em nossa área foi o I Neurolatam em 2008, em Búzios, RJ, foi prestigiado com entusiasmo pela presença participativa de Héctor Maldonado e seus discípulos, em coerência com várias iniciativas integradoras empreendidas por ele ao longo dos anos. Rodeado por inúmeros discípulos, Maldonado deixa um legado científico marcado pela originalidade e criatividade de sua linha de estudos de memória em um modelo invertebrado. Ao redor dessa linha, em seu laboratório na Universidade de Buenos Aires, ele soube reunir um talentoso grupo de pesquisadores de diferentes especialidades temáticas todos convergindo para a busca dos mecanismos da memória.  Anexo a seguir, um depoimento de um de seus mais destacados discípulos, Daniel Tomsic, docente da Universidade de Buenos Aires.

Dora Fix Ventura (Instituto de Psicologia, USP)

Héctor Maldonado fue un gran científico y docente, verdadero creador de
una escuela de neurociencias. Luego de muchos años de exilio por la
dictadura militar, regresó a la Argentina en 1983 y, como Director de la
Carrera de Biología de la Universidad de Buenos Aires, transformó la
enseñanza de la Biología. A lo largo de los últimos 25 años, su curso de
Fisiología del Comportamiento abrió las puertas de las neurociencias a un
incontable número de estudiantes. Asimismo, su laboratorio de Neurobiología de la Memoria, fue una usina generadora de neurocientíficos
que hoy se desempeñan en nuestro país y en el exterior.
Héctor fue un científico con una increíble pasión y una capacidad de lucha
y construcción que parecían inagotables. Su ideología estuvo siempre
claramente definida y sus actos fueron siempre consecuentes con ella. Fue
una persona de una ética admirable. Y fue un científico de primer nivel, pero diferente. Su desinterés por la construcción individual y su generosidad lo hacían una rara avis entre los grandes científicos.
Las siguientes dos pequeñas anécdotas personales, ocurridas hace ya más de 20 años, ilustran su personalidad: Apenas graduado y durante los meses de verano en que esperaba el resultado del concurso de la beca a la que me había presentado para realizar mi doctorado bajo la dirección de Héctor, me encontraba trabajando de guardavidas en la costa. A pleno medio día y bajo un sol que escaldaba el cerebro lo veo venir a Héctor caminando por la playa, complemente vestido y con zapatos y alzando los brazos como loco. Se encontraba retornando de sus vacaciones con su familia y los había hecho desviar muchos kilómetros para venir a comunicarme con un inmenso entusiasmo que me habían otorgado la beca. Desde entonces supe que aun con todo mi entusiasmo siempre estaría lejos de las pasiones que caracterizaban a ese hombre.
El segundo episodio ocurrió un par de años más tarde, cuando algunos
científicos mediocres devenidos en burócratas de un nuevo gobierno
neoliberal, intentaron castigarlo quitándole subsidios y también la
renovación de mi beca doctoral. Héctor rápidamente me consiguió un
contrato en Italia pero, como si eso fuera poco, canjeó su pasaje aéreo de
primera clase, que le había sido enviado por la institución Italiana para
asistir a un evento muy prestigioso, por dos pasajes de clase turista, uno
para mí.
De entre los muchos científicos de gran reputación que conozco, me cuesta imaginar a alguno que pudiera igualarlo en esas actitudes. Por eso no dudo en afirmar que además de científico de primer nivel, Héctor Maldonado era un científico especial. Para muchos de los que tuvimos la suerte de formarnos con él, fue un maestro de vida y un amigo.

Brainbow – Arco-íris no cérebro

A revista Cell publicou uma série de fotos com a técnica chamada “Brainbow” (veja aqui).

Brainbow é uma junção de Brain + Rainbow.

Através da coloração de cada neurônio isoladamente, com uma proteína fluorescente, esta técnica permite aos pesquisadores ver mais claramente como os neurônios fazem contato uns com os outros.

NEUROBIOLOGICAL BASIS OF DRUG ADDICTION

“NEUROBIOLOGICAL BASIS OF DRUG ADDICTION”

Dates: April 6-10, 2011

The main aim of the graduate school is to contribute to the knowledge of the neurobiological mechanisms of drug addiction. Experimental models in laboratory animals for the different aspects of drug addiction: abstinence, sensitization, reinstatement, tolerance and compulsion, will be covered. It will include generalizations of shared processes and the individual characteristics for opioids, benzodiazepines, psychostimulants, cannabinoids, nicotine and alcohol. The newest molecular advances and the different neural mechanisms in the context of the several theories of addiction will be discussed.

The school is orientated to students enrolled in Doctoral and Master Programs, as well as to young investigators in the Neuroscience areas, holding a Biochemistry, Medical, Biologist, Psychology, Pharmacy or Chemical Sciences degree.

The Neurotoxicity Society is pleased to offer 30 scholarships for PhD students that will cover accommodation and meals during the premeeting course and main meeting (April 6 to April 10).

The course will be divided in three modules:

I – Theoretical classes with papers discussions (April 6-7)

II – Main meeting with discussions at posters (April 7-10)

III – Final discussion with evaluation (April 10)

Interested students should submit a complete application which must include a brief curriculum vitae of no more than two pages and a preliminary abstract (the area of study should not necessary be related to the course subject).

Successful applicants will be awarded a scholarship sponsored by IUBMB and IBRO, which will cover tuition course fees, teaching materials, all meals and accommodation during the course and meeting. Students are expected to present a poster during the main NTS meeting and to attend all conferences, symposiums and poster sessions. The Committee decision will be e-mailed to successful applicants before January 10th, 2011.

Three post-doctoral fellowships in cognitive neuroscience

Applications are invited for three post-doctoral fellowships in cognitive neuroscience, funded by the Einstein Foundation Berlin. These positions will be held at the Berlin School of Mind and Brain of Humboldt-Universitaet under the supervision of Professor R J Dolan. The focus of the fellowships will be the neuroscience of decision making. The posts would also aspire to recruit those with an interest in decision making as it relates to psychopathology. The candidates should have a PhD either completed or in submission. Requisite skills should include an ability to programme, and skills in MATLAB. Some knowledge of computational neuroscience would be an advantage. The successful candidates should have displayed an aptitude to work independently and have an established interest in the general theme of the fellowships.

Funding: EUR 2,100 p.c.m.
Start date: 1 March 2011
Contract period: Funding available for two years
